When you spend 20 years booking talent and running award-winning comedy clubs, you develop a "bullsh*t detector" for performance. That’s exactly what Kal Getter brought to our demo sessions. Kal is the founder of the Hudson Valley’s Laugh It Up Comedy Club, and after decades of helping other artists find their timing, he decided it was time to put his own legendary rasp to work.
The Demo Challenge: Beyond the Grit
Kal’s voice is a producer’s dream—deep, gritty, and gravelly—but we didn't want to rely on the texture alone. The goal for this commercial reel was to bridge the gap between his "larger-than-life" background in live entertainment and the "grounded authenticity" that modern brands crave.
We spent our sessions focusing on the craft of the read. Because of his background with top-tier comedians and agencies, Kal understands storytelling better than most. We worked on:
The "Anti-Actor" Approach: Moving away from "sounding" like a voice actor and focusing on telling the truth of the script.
Translating Timing: Taking the rhythm Kal learned from years in the comedy world and applying it to a 30-second commercial spot.
Nuance: Proving that a bold, cinematic voice can still be incredibly warm, subtle, and relatable.
"Working on my reel with Frank was a huge turning point," Kal says. "He helped me stop overthinking and focus on being real and specific. That shift changed how I approach voiceover across the board."
A Major Milestone
The collaboration paid off in a big way. Shortly after finishing this reel, Kal signed with CESD, one of the most prestigious agencies in the world. It’s a testament to what happens when you pair years of industry "ear" with a relentless work ethic.
