Demo Reel? Demo REAL! Meet With Keith Norton- Commercial and VOG!

One of the things I enjoy most about producing demo reels is that no two projects are ever quite the same.

Sometimes I’m helping a newer voice actor build something from the ground up. We create custom scripts, record fresh material, work on tone, and carefully craft a demo designed to introduce them to the industry.

Other times, a voice actor comes to me with years of professional experience, a body of booked work, and a collection of recordings that already tell a compelling story. The challenge becomes less about creating material and more about shaping it.

That was the case when I worked with voice actor Keith Norton.

Keith and I had actually met before we ever started working together. I host occasional networking events for voice actors online and in-person in New York City, and Keith attended one of them. We talked briefly about demo production, the current voiceover marketplace, and what makes a reel effective. He was already familiar with my work through my website, so when the time came to update his demos, he reached out.

By the time we officially started the project, we were able to jump right into the creative work.

Building Two Very Different Reels

Keith came to me looking for two separate demos. The first was a commercial demo built primarily from actual national campaigns and booked work. The second was a Voice of God (VOG) demo showcasing his live announce capabilities. While both projects involved the same voice actor, they required very different approaches.

For the commercial reel, we had an abundance of excellent material to work with. Keith’s career includes campaigns for major brands including PenFed, eBay, Indeed, T. Rowe Price, MassMutual, Covenant House, and the Golden State Warriors. The challenge wasn’t finding strong performances. The challenge was deciding which performances best represented the full range of what he does.

When I build a commercial demo from existing work, I’m always thinking about pacing, variety, and first impressions. Casting directors often make decisions quickly. Every clip needs to earn its place. The goal isn’t to showcase every campaign a voice actor has ever booked. The goal is to create a reel that immediately communicates where they fit in today’s marketplace.

Keith’s commercial work has a natural, relatable quality that brands are actively looking for right now. He can sound conversational and approachable one moment, then pivot into something more authoritative or emotionally grounded without it ever feeling forced. The finished commercial reel reflects that versatility while keeping the energy moving from beginning to end.

The VOG reel was a different animal altogether. For anyone unfamiliar with the term, Voice of God announcing is the voice you hear introducing keynote speakers, welcoming audiences to major events, or setting the tone for a live production before anyone ever steps on stage. Keith has extensive experience in that space.

He’s served as the Voice of God for Magic: The Gathering live events around the world, announcing for packed venues and enthusiastic audiences. He’s also performed VOG duties for events hosted by the Hoover Institution in Washington, D.C., introducing dignitaries and prominent speakers.

Some of that material already existed, but Keith also recorded additional content specifically for this project. He sent over fresh reads that helped fill in gaps and showcase different aspects of his live announce style. The final VOG reel captures both sides of the work: the excitement and energy of a major live event and the authority required for high-profile institutional presentations.

A Career Built on Curiosity

One of the things I found most interesting about Keith’s story is how long the foundation for this career had been developing. As a kid, he wasn’t dreaming about being in front of the camera. He was fascinated by the voices behind the characters. He created impressions, characters, accents, and imaginary personalities long before he ever considered voice acting as a profession.

Eventually, at age 40, he decided to explore that interest seriously and enrolled at Voice One in San Francisco. What started as curiosity quickly became a commitment. Since then, he’s built an impressive body of work spanning commercial voiceover, animation, narration, audiobooks, and live announcing.

His animation credits include Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning Go! Go! Cory Carson and the animated pilot Radiance. He’s narrated more than a dozen audiobooks and voiced campaigns for major national brands. At the same time, he’s developed a reputation as a trusted Voice of God announcer for large-scale events.

It’s not often that you find a performer who can convincingly voice an animated character one day and command a live audience of thousands the next.

Great Audio Makes a Difference

As both a producer and an audio engineer, I always pay attention to a talent’s recording environment.

A great performance deserves great audio. Keith records from a professional home studio using a Neumann TLM 103 microphone and is fully equipped for remote-directed sessions through Source-Connect.

The material he provided was clean, consistent, and production-ready, which allowed me to focus on shaping the reels rather than correcting technical issues. That’s something many producers quietly appreciate more than they probably admit.

The Finished Reels

One of the most rewarding parts of demo production is helping a voice actor see their own career through a different lens. When you spend years booking projects one at a time, it’s easy to forget how impressive the complete body of work has become. Keith brought years of experience and a clear understanding of his strengths as a performer. My job was to help organize all of that into demos that tell that story quickly and effectively.

You can hear the reels by clicking them in this article. You’ll hear a voice actor who has spent years honing his craft, building a career, and earning the trust of major brands, producers, and live event organizers along the way.
